These natural sweeteners are a great option for type-2 diabetics willing to reduce their consumption of refined sugars and control their blood glucose levels.
These are natural and easy to find in any grocery store.

1. STEVIA
Stevia is extracted from a plant called Stevia Rebaudiana which originates from South America. Stevia sugar is sweeter than refined sugar but very low in calories. It has also some great health benefits in lowering blood pressure which is common symptoms in type-2 diabetics and maintaining blood glucose levels.
You can find stevia at your local health store Holland & Barrett, some brands like Pure Via are also available at Sainsburys
2. XYLITOL
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol which is associated with benefits for your dental health as it reduces risks of cavities and your digestive health as it promotes the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is very low in calorie less than 3 calories / gram. However, if consumed in excess, it can cause bloating and diarrhea. You can find Xylitol brands such as Total Sweet at Holland & Barrett or Sainsburys.
3. ERYTHRITOL
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol found in certain fruits which has zero impact on your blood glucose levels and insulin levels as it gets absorbed quickly in the small intestine and excreted out of your body through urine. Basically, this means erythritol doesn’t get the chance to metabolise in your body. For type-2 diabetics, it can be used as sugar alternative to sweeten your coffee and tea, sprinkle over Plain Greek yogurt or for baking. Like Xylitol, if consumed in excess, it can cause bloating and diarrhea. You can find Erythritol brand Pure Via in your local Sainsburys.
Although these are great alternative to refined sugars with health benefits, remember to consume these in moderation as part of your diet.
